Get Focused
There is something a lot of you might not know about me. I have what is called a "Lazy Eye". My left eye tends to wander sometimes. When this happens the signal it is sending to my brain is usually turned off. This is a good thing, because if the signal doesn't turn off then my brain receives two pictures. Yet there are times, usually when I am tired, that the wandering eye doesn't shut off the signal. When this happens, if I concentrate, I can actually be looking a two different things at the same time (This is cool!!).
You may be wondering why I am telling you this, well I do have a point. When my eye wanders I sometimes have a second or two when my eyes loose focus. When this happens I simply blink and all is back to normal. I was reflecting on this a while ago and I realized that this situation with my eyes can be compared to my life as a whole.
Sometimes my life goes out of focus. I try to live my life focused on Jesus and His will for my life. But sometimes my mind wanders (like my eye does) and I end up seeing things that I never intended to look at. It is kind of disturbing when this happens.
What I am talking about is what Jesus means when He says "Lead us not into temptation". Here I am minding my own business and the next thing I know I'm in the middle of temptation. I think, "Wow, where did that come from"? These temptations come from many places, but they never come from God!
So, what I am saying is that it is a normal thing for our lives, from time to time, to become unfocused. The important thing to remember is that we must not forget to blink. Just like my wandering eye, when I loose focus I can blink a few times and regain my focus, we can get the focus of our lives back by doing a spiritual blink.
OK, that does sound kind of strange, but here's what I mean: You shake your head, and say something like "Jesus HELP!" If you can remember to do this it is possible that a moment of temptation will not turn into a total loss of focus for your life (this is called sin). Right now the problem with my eye is just kind of annoying, but if the problem gets worse I might need surgery. The same is true for our lives. The good thing is that spiritual surgery doesn't cost as much as eye surgery. The Church is God's HMO and there is an out-patent procedure called the Sacrament of Reconciliation. If your life is out of focus give it a try!
